Full Crate & Mar

Yesterday, we got to hang out with Amsterdam artists Full Crate & Mar as they had their live recording at The Breeding Ground. These guys man…they were a lot of fun to be around. Patient through the setup, hilarious during soundcheck, Full Crate and Mar were totally cool to work with.

Then it was show time, and just as soon as I left the stage…pow! Mind you, I was there through a bunch of the soundcheck, and I was still blown away by the music. So was everyone lucky enough to be in the audience. My highlight of the night: Mar’s acoustic version of “I Said.” People hate when you OMG…but OMG. :-D

I can’t wait for the audio team to start mixing! I look forward to the songs being stuck in my head for weeks.

Tonight: Mar is headed to DC, so if you’re in the NOVA area definitely check him out. If you’re in NYC, check out Full Crate at The Bedford.

YouTube Sensation!

In the middle of a clean up, a spontaneous dance party erupted. Everyone was shaking their goodies! That part I missed.

However this, was priceless.

Beat it up, Beat it up

Everyone was focused today. So many things to do, and we have a major session coming up this weekend. It’s going to be crazy, 13 people! Whoa! (See Scott’s blog below for the breakdown.)

Things have been getting real here at HBM, and I think this week, everyone gained some crucial insight into the future: it’s going to be big!

I have to get back to my administrative tasks, but I leave you with some photo highlights of the week.

Money

This morning while I had my hour and a half of steady thinking due to traffic, I started to ponder all of the things I want to do.  Then, I remembered what Salinger says in The Catcher in The Rye: “Goddamn money, it always ends up making you blue as hell,” and I realized no truer statement could be written any simpler than that.  All of my aspirations…to be a writer, to record an album, to buy a cup of coffee; it all requires money.  It’s one of those things that you really can’t think too much about or it really does make you “blue as hell.”  Yet, there are ways to do whatever you want as long as you care enough and take the proper steps.  It’s nice to come to a place like HighBreedMusic where you know everyone there isn’t just working for that green stuff. We are excited to do what we love for that very reason: it’s what we love.  My lack of a full wallet doesn’t matter here; just chill people all doing what we love.  That’s why I endure all this traffic, that’s why I get up early; and it’s a beautiful thing.  Now, we have a very busy day ahead of us so cheers till later!

Canadian Illuminations, and Presidente on Holiday (because business trip doesn’t rhyme)

As we don’t mic the individual toms when we record drums, and just employ two dazzling Coles ribbon microphones as overheads, we have to isolate the drums digitally, and then bring them to their full potential.  Thus, the insane ninja drumming of So Disrespectful’s Dean James is quite a chore to discern, as he hits toms like hummingbirds flap wings.  This has been the bulk of my audio work lately, and the tracks are really shaping up.  The Khan is in his native Montreal for the week, contacting contacts, and promoting promotions, with a little fun on the side I hope.  My own visiting Canadian friend took some pictures of the rest of the HighBreed team today in our resident building 345 Eldert St. in the heart of Bushwick, Brooklyn, NYC; so that you may all see us in our zen glory.  A few of the shots are up here on our blog.  New York certainly witnessed a shot of life with the 80 degree (21 in Canada) weather, and I am appropriately reminded of Leonard Cohen (another Montreal native) and how the famous romantic described women on the first hot day of Spring, “..they peel like fruit.” Indeed, Monsieur Cohen.

Another day at the office

It’s that time of the afternoon when one more cup of coffee can make or break your evening. Given that I have a floating headache from the incense Buse brought today, (although James dug it)

it may not really be a good idea…and I’m not totally sure the espresso (no x), has completed its run through my system-parts of my brain feel pretty jumpy.

Everyone came in today with a must get work done attitude. Mike was hard at work in the main room when we came over from lounge cleanup. John learned the tom editing procedure from Scott. It’s crazy to feel that motivation bursting out of everyone in the room. Sometimes we get a little carried away…

but we’ve always got our mission in mind. We work hard, we smile harder.

Two noteworthy accomplishments today:

1-GroundFood was beyond pleased with their video! High-Five team!

2-Puttrookuu mastered the vertical arm stretch!

The rings = our health insurance plan.

They work, look at how healthy and fun we all are!

Great times, great people, great music.

Happy Birthday Herbie Hancock!!!
